an attraction to shiny objects
2004-08-21 7:49 pm

My friend Carrie came to visit me from Minneapolis, and I've been recording our crazy adventures, so I'll post them here for lack of anything more inspired.

We woke up at 9:30 on Thursday, which is the earliest I've gotten up in like a month. We went to Hollywood and walked around some. Saw all the tourists and people dressed up like Spiderman. Walked further and had Gyros for lunch.

Then we went to the Erotic Museum. Fingered dildos and breast implants. Saw ancient vibrators.

I bought a necklace at Hot Topic so we wouldn't have to pay for parking, and then we drove through Beverly Hills and down Rodeo Drive to look at the rich people and rich stores and naked woman statue. We drove all the way to Santa Monica and parked at the beach and walked up and down the pier. I played DDR. We walked on the beach. The beach at Santa Monica always makes me feel alive.

We came home to change and wash before going to eat shabu shabu at Zakuro, which is one of my favourite restaurants. We went to the vintage-novelty-porn store, and there was a plastic smoking baby that's the coolest thing I've ever seen. You could actually light the cigarettes, and it had a warning label that said 'REAL BABIES SHOULD NOT SMOKE'. Man, I love that place.

We walked around Little Tokyo s'more and I dragged Carass into a video rental store where I saw both videos of X's Tokyo Dome live for rental. The one I haven't seen. I'm going to have to go back.

I bought a pretty pink shirt at a cool clothes store because I'm attracted to shiny objects, and I realized that my Barnes & Noble credit card works anywhere, which is dangerous.

We stayed up watching Secretary Thursday night and sort of sat around and realized we were exhausted, so we slept. Friday we drove to Encino so I could pick up my check at work. I have money again. This is good.

We stopped by a small sushi bar for lunch. BCBG Maxazaria was right next door, though. Naturally I had to go in. And try on clothes. There was a yellow silk dress that was GORGEOUS, but I couldn't justify buying it, so I got a coral halter top instead... for $100.

We drove to Amoeba and hung around. Carrie finally bought something [a Bjork live box set] and we went to Melrose so we could have Jamba Juice, which is essential to the California experience. Energy boosts and citrus and walking up and down the store strip.

We changed and went out to eat at the Souplantation, which is basically a salad/pasta bar, but it's amazingly good - not to mention all you can eat.

We went to the Sunset Strip and parked at the Virgin Megastore where I found the Dissociatives album! [Daniel Johns' side project with Paul Mac... SCORE!] The album's incredible. Harmonies from heaven. We had martinis at the Trocadero and some guy named Derick chatted us up. We drove home and stopped by the liquor store for beer, fuzzy navels, and Jagermeister.

Last night was... interesting. We got slightly drunk and took pictures of ourselves in sexy clothes.

Today was a mega art-museum shopping experience. I'm on a high. Wheee! We slept late again, but I got up excited because today was South Coast Plaza day, AKA one of the biggest, most eclectic malls in the country, with everything from Gucci to Gap.

We swung by Carl's Jr for lunch and had the quintessential LA experience of eating fast food while driving. We got to the plaza around 2:30 and shopped for four hours.

I just about creamed myself. I got to see Zac Posen clothes up close. And we went into Dior, Gucci, Yves St Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana... I saw a pair of GORGEOUS purple pumps in Gucci that I'm determined to save for and buy [they cost $475]. Carass bought a cute sweater-top thing at the Limited [$40]. I got an awesome pair of blue pants [$60] and a cream-coloured tank [$40] at Express, a lovely pair of black sandals at Nordstrom [$60], and a hot half-tie Robert Rodriguez cashmere sweater [$160]. I feel fully shopped-out.

Well, almost. I still want those Gucci pumps.

Tonight we're going to be ultra-lazy and order a pizza.
